As the days get longer and the snow begins to melt, we can’t help but think ahead to summer. Our opening date of June 14 is still a couple months away, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We had a great year in 2024 and while we caught some big fish for this episode of Tazin TV, we also spent some time trying out some new baits, filming underwater and seeing how many fish we can catch close to camp. There’s a belief that you have to travel a long ways from where you’re staying to find fish and that’s just not true at Tazin. To be fair, our lake is small enough that getting far away doesn’t take long. But there are piles of fish close enough to catch both pike and lakers off the dock. Guests will walk the shore line with spinning gear or fly rods and have that familiar tug on the end of their line.

To start this new episode (scroll down to watch), Dan Amundson and I head out on a windy day and tuck into some of the bays that are close to the lodge. The clear water offers sight fishing opportunities as well as a chance for guys like me to film underwater. Dan wanted to try out some new baits from Northland Tackle (formerly of Bemidji, MN), and I was anxious to get footage and some stills.

After some time with these pike, we jump in a boat with Trevor Montgomery and head out in search of big lakers. Some days the bites come often, other days it can be a grind. I think of it like deer hunting, when you sit and wait for the big bucks to come out. Thankfully a big one did make an appearance and Trevor put it in the boat.

We also spent time looking for big pike and hitting a spot where the biggest pike I’ve seen get caught, a 51.5″ giant caught by Trevor in 2018. Watch the video here.

While he didn’t catch one that big, he did still catch a trophy!
